It's a bit hard to compare the Patriots to those other teams because they're so different. They're probably either number one or number five, depending on how you look at it.

I'm tempted to put them at number one. They may lack the brilliant individual performers (although New England's players deserve far more credit than they get), but their schemes, their creativity and their game plans are farther ahead of the rest of the league than any of the other great teams ever were.* Watching the Patriots is like seeing a glimpse of what NFL football will be like a few years down the road.

* Packer fans might argue this one. :-)

Since this discussion started, I have been able to think about this in more depth. With some prodding, I could move them up to 3rd. I can't put them over the Steelers or the Packers yet. I say yet because their run is still happening. I'm not sure that we can really say for sure until it is over. I would move San Fran down because while impressive, they never really had their optimal team out there. What I mean is that people generally regard the '84 team as their best and they didn't even have Rice at that time. Dallas was impressive but I will put the Pats over them for sure.
