Dynasty?

Postby BigMusky » Mon Feb 07, 2005 11:56 am

Patriots...um no. I dont think there ever has or will be a dynasty in the NFL. Sure the steelers were the team of the 70's, 49ers team of 80s, Cowboys team of the 90's and Patriots are probably the team of the decade. But none of those teams had a dynasty during those decades. Patriots did not even make the playoffs two years ago! A dynasty is UCLA when they won a billion titles in a row, the Montreal Canadians, Chicago Bulls. Those team owned the league for at least 8 years. I also dont buy this load of crap the Patriots are a dynasty because of the Salary cap and free agency....everyone points out that it is alot harder to keep your core players, well I would point out it is alot easier to replace them and bring in new people too.

Did somebody say Dynasty?

If you're point is that there is never been any such thing as a dynasty in the NFL, that's your opinion, and is fine.

But, on the other side of the coin, if the: 60s Packers, 70s Steelers, 80s Niners and 90s Cowboys were dynasties, than this Patriots team is as much a dynasty as the others.

I'm old enough to remember the Steelers of the 70s who were AWESOME. And I actually lived in SF (about 10 minutes from Candlestick Park) for part of the Niners' glory days, and saw first-hand how dominant they were. And all of us remember when Dallas had things firmly in control with Aikman, Irvin etc.

So, when I look at what SB teams in the current era usually do after their SB season (think Ravens, Tampa Bay, Oakland, etc.) then three SB championships in four years (and still going strong) is pretty dominant.

Dictionary.com wrote:
  1. A succession of rulers from the same family or line.
  2. A family or group that maintains power for several generations: a political dynasty controlling the state.

I think that you have to consider them a dynasty. To do this in the age of free agency makes it even that much more impressive.

What if the Patriots do not win a playoff game for the next ten years? Are they still a dynasty? Steelers were contenders most of the years they did not win the SB. So I consider them more dominant then say the cowboys who pretty much were garbage before and after their superbowl runs. How many playoff games have the cowboys won since their last superbowl? none. So if the patriots have not reached the Steeler level quite yet.

This is just about hypotheticals. What if Vinatieri never made the snow kick?? The thing is that they have done something amazing in an era when it is impossible to keep all of your players. I have no problem saying that the Steelers were better but this is a great run. I also don't think that Buffalo gets enough credit for making it to 4 in a row. That is very impressive.

The Cowboys lost it due to age/retirement. The team that they had (Aikman, Smith, Irvin, Allen, Wooson, Lett, Haley, Novacek, Johnston) was indeed a dynasty team.

When a team comes from nowhere and is good for a couple of years, and then falls back to mediocrity without an explanation...now those are the teams who are unworthy of dynasty status.

How are the Pats not a dynasty? I don't like them, they're the Yankees of the NFL to me, but they're a dynasty.

And yes, the cap does make it a LOT harder to have a dynasty like this. The great players are spread out over all the teams, for the most part, not all bundled up on 2 rosters like in the NHL, MLB, and to some extent the NBA (Bulls and then Lakers).
