Last year was pretty disruptive for him: not living up to that contract, being benched in Houston and then the highs and lows of his stay in NY. I don't necessarily subscribe to the contract year theory. But I do think after that lack of interest this off-season, the need to sign a one-year "prove yourself" contract and minus the mental baggage from last year that Hidalgo will recommit himself. And Houston is nowhere near the hitter's park Arlington is.
Well Hidalgo tried to pull everything in Minute Maid that was one of his problems.
Over the last 3 years, Arlington is far better: Arlington 111 Park Factor Minute Maid 100
Eh... another guy at Alex Patton's website was raving about Hidalgo when he was first traded to the Mutts. He looked like he was going to put up some serious numbers but fizzled as usual. At this point, he is what he is. A .270 ish hitter with some pop (25 HR?). He won't ever come close to his 00 year unless he goes to Coors.

The dude's only 29 and hit .309 with 28 HRs in '03. He has the potential to be a .300/30 HR in Arlington.
Jay Gibbons might be the surprise of the year... remember he hit .280 with twenty taters and 100 rbi's for the Orioles in '03. He was a train wreck last year with all the gimps, and has been pronounced healthy. Also, he had laser eye surgery in November, and will play 1b regularly now after the Birds move the Raffy to DH.
That should be a move that helps both players get their bats up.
.275/28/100 for Gibbons.
