I'm at the point in my draft where I need my 4th of 5 OF's, but at the same time could use a little depth @ MI. Would anyone think that Mench could be that much better than Freel to give up the dual position elgibility that comes with Freel?
thats a tough call ... a lot of people are expecting big numbers from mench...i would prob take mench if i saw some other options up the middle....who knows maybe freel will slip another round
I drafted Kevin Mench in a 12 teamer as my 4th OF. Which is what he should be for you because there is some risk involved. He shouldn't really be considered a fantasy starter in small or mid-size leagues.
The primary risk is the strained oblique he had. Oblique injuries worry me because they effect the swing more than any other injury, IMO. If he stays healthy he has a good chance to see 500ABs , hitting close to 30HRs, .280BA, in a very good lineup, in a very good hitters park.
I've been keeping an eye on Texas' off season moves. It doesn't look like they will acquire anyone who will take a chunk of his playing time away. You Ranger fans can correct me if I'm wrong.
The league I drafted him in uses LF,CF,RF instead of 3OF. Mench qualifies at RF + LF, so that bumps his value a little in leagues that uses that as roster positions.
I'm looking for Mench (who just turned 27 in Jan) to take it up a tick this year. This may be your last year to get him cheap.

I agree completely. He's had the oblique strain, plus two half years of wrist problems...., to quote Gammons, "this kid can rake". .290/30/100 wouldn't surprise me at all.

I settled on Mench, thanks to everyone for the feedback. I was like Pogo, if I knew for certain his playing time would equal Mench's I would have liked his position elgibility. Thanks again.
