Speculation on Danny Graves - Reds fans?

Postby Sticky Spice » Tue Feb 01, 2005 5:13 am

I seem to recall the word on the street last year being that Graves would be dealt at midseason. Then with the Reds being competitive and Wagner not quite stepping up, that never happened.

This is now Graves contract year, so might not the same thing happen this year? If Graves is off to a hot start, or even a good start, wouldn't the Reds likely deal him assuming they're not in the race? I doubt they'd want to give him a nice payday with Wagner right there.

I'm just thinking that if he's possible trade bait, it might be to a team needing middle relief.

Yes, it's definitely possible that Graves will be dealt, but I certainly wouldn't cross him off your draft lists because of that possibility. Last year, thanks to the Wagner buzz, Graves was among the most undervalued players in fantasy drafts as many owners wouldn't touch him with the proverbial ten-foot pole. This year, he already seems to be slipping more than he should.

Don't pay a premium for him, but if you see him dropping through the cracks, he could once again be a bargain.

I don't think he will get traded, but you never know until the deadline approaches. Whoever is the closer for the Reds will get a lot of chances to save games because they play a lot of close games. I still think Graves will be the closer all year long though.
