the $12 figure for Sosa that's been reported is actually 2 separate things. They are picking up $8m of this year's salary and sporting the full $4.5 for next year's buyout in order for Sosa to waive the automatic 2006 $18m salary if traded.

not according to espn. the cubs pay $12 mil of sammy's 2005 salary. the orioles are on the hook for $5 mil of his 2005 salary plus the $4.5 mil option (which they hope will be a moot point because they will try to sign him to an extension). doesnt really matter how you allocate it though if it all adds up to the same number.

I don't understand why they just didn't let Hollandsworth/Dubois batte lit out for the last OF slot instead of paying 5 million to bring in a left handed Sosa clone....

Uggh, god Burnitz isn't even better than Sosa. This blows.

Burnitz will produce almost identical numbers to what the Cubs would have gotten from Sammy anyway, so that's a push. We gained a legit lead-off hitter in Hairston, and if he is an everyday player at the top of the order I consider that a plus for the Cubs.

The hole they have yet to fill is Alou's. I love Hollandsworth as a utility OF, but as an everyday player? Yikes. And who knows what Dubois can bring to the table.

So, we'll see. I'm not taking the pissed off route that a lot of Cub fans seem to be going because the rest of the contenders in our division took their share of losses this offseason as well.
