Brad Radke, not Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, will be the Twins' Opening Day starter, manager Ron Gardenhire announced. Santana took the news in stride, but this is just another case of the Twins holding him back. In 2002, he wasn't even given a chance to win a bullpen spot out of spring training. In 2003, the team wouldn't let him compete for a place in the rotation. When he's been allowed to take the mound, he's been significantly more effective than Radke three years running. Although there's been talk of a three-year deal, we're guessing Santana is going to bolt at the first opportunity. He'll be eligible for free agency after 2006. Jan. 29 - 5:09 am et
I guess winning the Cy isnt enough to warrant being the Opening Day starter
They said they picked Radke because he's been there longer and are giving him respect. I think its crap. The people want to see the best pitcher out there on Opening Day, and that's Johan.
after hearing this news brad radke moves to the 3# pitcher on my list. johan is going to be my biggest sleeper this year since he will probably fall to rounds 15-20 now.
p.s. that is BS! I agree that respect is very important between players/management however wining is still the bottomline and when respect for one particular player hinders your chance to win, isnt that being disrespectful to the other 24 guys on the roster? not to mention the thousands of fans who support the team year in and year out.
