The old man is Locke. He was paralyzed before the plane crash but since he has been on the island he has regained his ability to walk.

What I don't get is how did the hatch light up in a previous episode if the only thing inside is a deep hole. Where did that light come from?

How do we know its just a deep hole? The camera view was from the bottom looking up, we still don't know whats down there.

That's been bothering me too. I thought for a while that maybe the writers intended the light to be a metaphor for Locke realizing that he's almost fulfilled his "destiny" or whatever. But that would be retarded. I also laugh every time Locke goes off about how opening the hatch is his destiny. If it turned out that my destiny was to open a big metal box, I'd be a little disappointed.

i agree that i think we are all going to be disappointed ala x-files..i think the "clues" are getting too muddled and at times contradictory...how come the supposed mystic walt tells locke not to open the hatch but doesnt "see" his own kidnapping at sea ?
