Its really too bad Detroit couldnt have locked him up for longer. Pena is a breakout candidate once again, and he is gonna use this upcoming yr to get the big payday. Apparantly Boras (who else?) wouldnt even talk about a multi yr deal - it was off the table from the beginning.

As most of you know, Pena's biggest knock against him is his low BA and high strikeouts. He is seriously improving in those measures - starting last season and continuing through the Dominican league. Currently he's hitting well above .300 in winterball.

Pena's the pride of Haverhill, Massachusetts. He gets a lot of coverage in the Boston papers. I hope he does have a big year. He's supposed to be a great kid.

about 3 months ago i posted that i would never want pena in any of my teams cuz his AVG would drive me crazy. dunno if it's CM's influence, but somehow i don't think he's that bad anymore he posted solid power numbers and will prolly continue to improve since he's only 26.

i think some people got burned when they drafted pena when he was in OAK in 02 and didn't do much and he's been under the radar since he moved to detroit.

as CM said, i think he's a good breakout candidate.

Hell, if Jose Guillen could do it out of absolutely nowhere a couple years ago, Carlos Pena could easily do it.

He's my 2nd favorite kinda sleeper where he was once highly touted and just needed the time to fine tune his game that any other normal major leaguer needed. Just because a guy has a high ceiling doesn't mean he has an accelerated learning rate.

Good point on him being 26 if that's true. Easy to forget that with guys that seemingly have been around forever.
