I just heard a Gammons clip saying Boras is tempted to wait till Monday and get the Yanks/Mets bidding war going. But I don't believe it, because all the vibes from NY are that Steinbrenner's not interested. (I think I even saw somewhere that he hasn't mentioned Beltran to anyone in org in last two weeks, though I don't recall the source). Gammons almost made it sound as if George wasn't returning Boras calls. So my gut says Beltran stays in Houston, and counts his tax savings. But my gut's been wrong before.
I say Astros too. That's hard for me to say as a Mets fan, but I believe Carlos is a bit different than some other players, and will stay where he is comfortable.
Some people say that if this is so, why has Boras waited until the deadline to agree. My cut on that is that he's hoping that someone (Mets, Yankees) will come in at the last second and raise the ante substantially, blowing the Astros offer out of the water. I don't think that will happen, and I think he'll be back in a "'Stros uniform for many years to come.
The next question is, that if this happens, will they be able to afford, hold onto Berkman
I'm going with Astros. He seemed to like it, His wife liked it.
It seems that the offers are very close. Why risk a good situation over a few million dollars.
With the Astros new offer only being 7 million lower than the Mets, my guess is that he stays with the Astros. There's not a huge difference when you are talking about 105 or 112 million. From an outside observers point of view, Carlos doesn't seem like the kind of person who wants to deal with the pressure that a city like New York will provide. Though, the wild card in this situation is Boras, as his players tend to go where the money is.
