Jeromy Burnitz - OF - COL


The Cubs are showing interest in free agent Jeromy Burnitz, who would take over in left field.
Burnitz might not be an upgrade over Jason Dubois, but since this is a Dusty Baker team, there was never much hope that Dubois would get an opportunity to play regularly. At least the addition of Burnitz would give the team another left-handed bat. Jan. 4 - 3:22 am et

Yes, all we need is to get rid of a whiff master & anti-clutch player in right in Sosa & sign an even worse option for LF. I'd rather pay Sosa $18 million and watch him hit .250.

Get some SPEED!!! I'd really like the Cubs to offer a pitching prospect for Gathright in Tampa. Won't happen, but we need someone on the paths in the worst way. Can only imagine him running wild beating out routine grounders on the slow Wrigley grass.

Yeah this looks like a bad fit for the cubs. I would feel a little better about it if it were for a 1 year 1 million type contract but thats a stretch. Agreed, they need speed, not another power hitting strikeout hitter.

This got me thinking, what exactly are the Cubs doing? They have the best 1,2,3 SP combo in MLB. They have money to spend.

Alou 11.5, Clement 6, and Alex Gonzalez 5.5 are all gone.
Plus these contracts end after 2005.
Sosa 17 – 4.5 buyout = 12.5
Perez 1
Remlinger 3.8
Dempster 2
Borowski 2.5
Nomar 8
Walker 2.5

Maddux has a 2006 options he might or might not meet and Hawkins has a 3.5 player option for 2006.

So with great SP, contracts coming off the books, and a sold out stadium all the time the Cubs are going after Burnitz? I'm not saying they should overpay for Beltran or anything but Burnitz?
