I've tried to watch MLB.com highlights on Mozilla Firefox but I always get the message "can not create directshow player". Does anyone know of anything I could do to fix this?

You mean the highlight I'm trying to watch? It's on this page:
http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/ ... p?c_id=chc
It's the Prior 16 K's one.

OK...well I know that Real Player is required for MLB.com, but not sure if I can upgrade that...not really sure about the decoder thing though.

It worked for me using Windows Media Player, so after opening up the pop-up window containing the video, try clicking on "preferences" and choose to launch it on WMP instead of Quicktime .... that might work. Regarding the decoder thing, it should be handled automatically if the player is installed properly.
Go here for details. Also read the Known Issues section about the registry patch for WMP9
