Neither club should be joyous over that deal except for the fact of the money saved by LA.
Yankees signed first baseman Tino Martinez, who had been with the Devil Rays, to a one-year, $3 million contract with an option for 2006. The 37-year-old Martinez is this year's Travis Lee. He's had an OPS under 800 in four of the last six years, so even though he was pretty good in his year with Tampa Bay, there's little reason to think he'll be much of an asset this year. Still, he could have a fair amount of fantasy value, depending on what happens with Carlos Beltran and Jason Giambi. The contract calls for him to receive $2.75 million in 2005, and the Yankees hold $3 million option for 2006 with a $250,000 buyout.
