Cardinals / Eckstein agree on 3 year deal

Postby El Gaupo » Thu Dec 23, 2004 9:18 pm

From roto world i'll look for a link

The Cardinals and David Eckstein have reportedly agreed to terms on a three-year deal.
Eckstein isn't the worst player to get a three-year deal this winter (Mike Matheny), but unless the deal is worth less than $3 million per year -- doubtful -- it's a bad signing. This is a player who has hit .252/.325/.325 and .276/.339/.332 the last two years. He would have been a nice one-year stopgap at shortstop, but if the Cardinals were willing to go long-term, they should have paid the extra million or two per year it would have taken to lure Placido Polanco. Looks like a 3 way trade that benefits the Red Sox and Anaheim but screws over the Cardinals.....

I reckon the Cardinals had to make that signing. Eckstein has plenty of guts, has very good defense and knows how to get on base. His OBP last season was Top 10 among SS (quite a bit ahead of Renteria) and his K's were the lowest among all SS with over 500 AB's.

He should be a good fit in St Louis and is a much better option than Luna at this stage.

For fantasy purposes his value also increases. He will likely play 150 plus games and batting leadoff in that stacked lineup will be an excellent late round pickup in a position that lacks real depth.

I hope they are trying to save $$ at SS in order to spend elsewhere

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

We go from one SS who was on a WS-winning team to another SS who was on a WS-winning team. We know he's spunky, and I can guarantee you that those guts will make him a popular player in St. Louis.

Didnt you guys have another infielder with spunk last year? I think he was a 2b man... where did he go?
