Sosa/Beltran Developments this week?

Postby rich101682 » Thu Dec 23, 2004 3:18 pm

With Houston upping their offer to Beltran, and the fact that he'll probably make his decision before January 8th, where do the Cubs fit in to this. They said they would pursue him if they could buck Sosa's contract. With that in mind, it seems like they would have to do this relatively soon to have a shot at him. But I haven't heard a word about Sosa in a week and a half. Anyone know what's going on?

Yes, the Cubs are screwed. None of the interested teams are going to move on Sosa until Beltran signs unless the Cubs bend over and say, "Please give me another, sir." O:-)

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

He's still a Cub. I don't think the Cubbies are going to get Beltran.

They say they're saving money dealing Beltran, but the truth of the matter is they won't be saving enough to make any bearing on getting Beltran.

I don't think Sosa will be a Cub, but I also don't see Beltran as a Cub. I don't think Cubs would top the reported $96 mil, 6 year offer (with no state tax) the Astros have on the table now.

So it's sort of a catch-22? Cubs can't sign Beltran until Sosa is gone, but Cubs can't get rid of Sosa until Beltran signs. Geez, we are cursed...

THat sucks because I'd love to see Patterson, Beltran, and Hollandsworth out there on opening day. Speaking of, anyone heard anything about Hollandsworth resigning?

I can't see anyone taking on Sosa's contract with another year added on if he is traded. The Cubs are just going to have to tough it out and part ways after 2005.

Sigh, not fun at all. What are my Cubbies going to do about leftfield?

This one is simple

Beltran called Allan Baird weekly to tell him how much he missed the small city of KC. Do you really think he's going to the Mets or Yanks...NO WAY. He's using them to drive up the price in Houston where he is 100% guaranteed to return.

Why else would Houston clear the Miller salary. They know they're getting him.

Maybe that's because the Yankees haven't even made an offer ;-)
