Ok Harriston was tendered and Eckstein wasn't. So basically the FA SS are Larkin, Eckstein, Rey Sanchez, Alex Gonzalez, Wilton Guerrero, and Jose Vizcaino. And the FA 2B are Pokey Reese
Enrique Wilson, Miguel Cairo, and Roberto Alomar. There are more of each but these seem the most reasonable. Others rumored to be available in trade are 2B Jerry Hairston, 2B Polanco and SS Julio Lugo.
Larkin and Cairo would be a decent IF. Not great of course, but a lot cheaper than Polanco and who ever they would get to play SS. I'm not really sure what the FA market for MI will be after '05, but that may be where a deal will have to be made if this stop gap works out. I'd be interested to know what teams would be demanding for guys like Harston, Lugo, or maybe Polanco.
What about Cora? I don't know what all the non-tendered and stuff like that means but he would be a good option at 2B I would think. He's gold glove caliber and while he may not do much with the bat that isn't really a concern since there isn't that much offensive force left in the FA pool anyway and offense is the least of this teams concerns. A MI of Cora/Eckstien would be great defensively and cost less than $5-$6 million wouldn't it?That's pretty good deal.
it wouldnt be an offseason if walt didnt sign a grizzled old veteran so i am expecting larkin, and hoping it isnt alomar. alomar could still be decent but i wouldnt want to guarantee him anything.
cora is a decent option at 2b. he has had some ok offensive years but has had some really ugly ones as well. plays gold glove caliber defense though. hairston is still my top choice for 2b because i think he would make a really good leadoff hitter. i would even go after hairston to be a utility guy as he could fill in at center field meaning we wouldnt have to bring so taguchi back, whom i like but whose only purpose seems to be to back up edmonds.
i think we could have larkin for $1 mil, hairston for something like $2? (dont know who we would have to trade). since larkin only figures to play about 100 games we might spend another $1 or $2 for a quality utility man.
