Would be curious as to the terms of the deal and how much money this might free up for 2005 (e.g. to get Hudson or someone else).

I would bet they did this to keep from having to pay him the 100k per start they were going to have to give.

It's not an extension, it's all all new two year deal with an option for 2007. I've heard that it will pay him roughly $10M per season.

I'm glad to see Smoltz finish his career in Atlanta as a starter. It would be so awesome if he got 18-20 years and won they Cy Young.
