Seems to me that Renteria and Cabrera have about the same real-life value. The team that grabs O-Cab will have gotten a bargain since it will presumably be more a fair bit less than Renteria.

HUH? How do you figure? Renteria is clearly a far superior hitter. Cabrera might have a small edge in defense, but Renteria is quite good himself.

Defensively I'd say Renteria is better. And same thing on offense, Renteria does have an edge, but it's not that big. IMO Renteria benefitted a lot from his lineup, I doubt his numbers would be much better than O-Cab's given the same lineup.

Considering Renteria will likely get a LOT more money than O-Cab, I'd say the owner who "settles" for Cabrera made the wiser decision.

i have always thought renteria was a good defender although perhaps a tad overrated (limited range). maybe i was just spoiled by watching the wizzard.

IF renteria hits more like he did in the 2nd half of 2002 and all of 2003 then cabrera isnt even close offensively. edgar may settle back into the .275-.285 range though. i imagine if edgar signs with the cards there is some backloading and/or deferred payments. the present value of his contract may not be too different than cabrera's. i find it hard to believe cabrera will sign for less than 7 considering guzman and vizquels contracts.
