Giants release Pierzynski

Postby TownDrunk » Tue Dec 14, 2004 8:51 pm

Was just announced on KNBR. It's unconditional, as he is now a FA.

All I've got to say is that I hope Sabean has a plan to bring in a bat for the OF, because replacing AJ with Matheny and not compensating for the offense that is being lost is simply stupid. You can't count on repeat offensive performances by Snow and Grissom. The offense will suffer next year if the Giants don't bring in another bat.

On a side note, the Giants also signed Jeff Fassero to a minor league deal.

I dont know why unless something happened. His attitude has been reported to be bad but his play is good.

They signed Matheny to 3/10.5M if you can believe it.

What they lose at the plate, they more than make up behind the plate. They have 2 solid options at catcher.

Defense does you no good if you can't score a run.

And who is the other solid option at catcher? Torrealba? The guy hit .197 against righthanders last season, and is batting .219 in winter ball right now. Even his defense slipped last season.

They were 2nd in the NL in runs scored, only 5 behind StL. A bat behind Bonds would help because Snow likely won't have another season like that, but they need help in the rotation. If only they didn't waste so much money on Vizquel they could have landed one of those $7M pitchers. Lieber would be my choice. Alas, they did sign Vizquel, so I don't think they have much more of a chance than last year (although Benitez was a great signing).

I agree that their offense could use some work but most are surprised to find out that SF scored the 2nd most runs in the NL and the 7th most in MLB. :-?

.219 makes him on par offensively with Matheny. Both solid bizarro format options. Really, who is going to protect Bonds...Alfonzo again? Grissom?
