Mets doing anything?

Postby bjm97 » Mon Dec 13, 2004 12:52 pm

Aside from Stanton for Heredia, what are the Mets going to do the rest of the off season. Where is Floyd rumored to be heading (I can't even believe Manny for Floyd was discussed). Is Matsui going to be dealt? I don't need to see the Mets make a huge splash but it would be nice to pick up a SP and first baseman. Floyd is an injury risk, and not my favorite player, but why are the Mets so determined to deal him? I can't believe the Mets are seriously in the Pedro or Sexson running. Watch us sign Mo for another 15/20 million a year... Nothing would surprise me, unless we actually landed a legitimate big bat (good luck Arod/Vlad/ect...).

DK/Amazing- any thoughts?

Every rumor I see involves the mets..

Manny
Pedro
Odalis Perez
Hudson

also..

the Mets offered Floyd and $3 million to the Arizona Diamondbacks and asked for first baseman Shea Hillenbrand and shortstop Alex Cintron in return

They are really trying..I have to give it up to them

Rumors are one thing that the Mets are known for, pulling the trigger is a whole other ball game. I can see the Mets landing Perez out of that list. Hudson would be a dream to have a great 1/2 punch again (since 2000 I believe).

Reyes and Kazmir probably would have been good enough to get Hudson.

How about Zambrano and a prospect?

The Manny discussions are legit but the details are skewed. Kaz is not involved in the discussions, Floyd, Mientkiewicz, Lastings Milledge are. The deal for money and Floyd that the Mets supposedly turned down is bogus. Made no sense for Boston and the Mets would have jumped on it. This deal is doomed to die just like it did the first time around.

Matsui is not going anywhere. The Mets don't want to trade him but on top of that he has a no-trade clause for his entire contract. According to one beat reporter he has no plans to waive it.

A 1B would be nice and Mientkiewicz might be the best shot. The Mariners are determined to overpay for Sexson and Delgado wants huge money. There are also rumors he doesn't want to play in Shea for fear it will hurt his numbers.

Floyd is like Rey Ordonez, Part II. He sealed his fate when he made those comments. The Mets could do worse than Floyd so hopefully they tread carefully. Pee-Hands Alou is not the answer, luckily it appears he does not want to play in NY. Something about the death of his uncle.

Everything is pointing to the Mets being bigger players in the Beltran sweepstakes than anyone imagined.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

That's great news! I wanted no part of him.

That would be great also. I think they should go and make a quick aggressive offer for him.

Thanks for the great insight Amazinz. I would be happy to see the Mets get Mientkiewicz - a nice 300 hitter would be great, but don't know aside from Floyd/Kaz what Boston would want (prospects?). I would love to see Beltran as a Met but just can't imagine us actually getting someone the Yanks want..

The Yankees aren't going to have the money to win the Beltran sweepstakes. Of course it's never wise to bet against King George, he might mortgage one of his yachts just to pull it off. Not that I think the Mets will win because the Astros have to be considered the favorites and Detroit is expected to make a big push. The Tigers could be the team to come out of nowhere and land him because, depending on how much they are willing to increase payroll, they could have the most financial flexibility of any of the interested teams.

At some point money becomes secondary to geography and playing for a contender - thats where Detroit falls short. Detroit has a ton of cash to sign players, but Dombrowski is trying to be careful with the signings. It looks like Detroit is going to get Lowe and rumors have JD Drew heading here too. I seriously doubt Beltre or Beltran will come to Detroit, although we are mentioned as still being in the running for both of them. We also are still looking for a MR pitcher and possibly another starter along with Lowe. Having Inge is huge for us right now because of his flexibility.
