Honestly, with the deals for Benson, Wright and Lieber, $8.5M/year isn't horrible in comparison (they're all too high, IMHO). I agree that he drops SIGNIFICANTLY in my sheets based on this move, though.

I think Ortiz's numbers may fall off worse than Dessens' number plummeted here...if that's even possible?!? Assuming the Ortiz talks are valid, I'm extremely puzzled as to why they signed him and Glaus unless they're also keeping Sexson and maybe Randy? Are we looking to win now? Is that even a plausible route to take with all the baby backs still in key roles?

Ortiz won't be that much worse than normal. Sure he won't be quite as good (which isn't saying much), but you guys are acting like he is actually being traded to Colorado.

Regarding the D'Backs...it does look as though they are trying to win now. Or maybe it's a bargaining gimmick to get NYY to think they are trying to win to get a better package for RJ, but it seems like if this is the case they are wasting their money on Ortiz and Glaus which would be more than the extra they could get out of NY.

u can say that they are now trying to win, but are they making a run for 2005 and pehaps 2006? i thought the dbacks were in rebuilding mode and not signing these veterans who are not that good.

The Mets-West are just out of control. Almost $20M a year on Glaus and Ortiz? They should have just signed Beltran, they would have gotten more value. Actually, they could have signed Beltran and a bargain SP like Woody Williams. Just idiots, I would be poking my eyes out if I were a DBacks fan.
