hard to blame the kid for his numbers in 2003. he was supposed to be in double A but injuries and lack of options led to the cardinals calling him up well before he was ready. the plan was give him his first taste of the big leagues in sept. 04.
a trade for marquis and the jeff suppan signing lead to dan starting the year in triple A where he had 150 strikeouts in 128 innings. he was called up to start against the cubs with less than 24 hours notice due to a jason marquis back injury. he got spanked in that game. he got sent down because marquis only needed a game rest. the rest of the season went great for dan. if you throw out that first start against the cubs his numbers the rest of the season were 2.76 era, 1.16 whip, and 6.8 k/9 in 42.1 ip. he made four starts down the stretch for the cardinals. in those starts he had a 2.91 era, 1.11 whip, and 7.89 k/9. two of those starts came against the brewers and pirates. the others came on the road against playoff teams atlanta and houston. dan also pitched 8+ innings in the playoffs notching a 2.16 era and didnt allow any runs in the world series.
it is hard to guess win totals but i know that haren is a better pitcher than marquis. both marquis and morris ended up with 15 wins last year. hell bottenfield even won 18 games with them one year. generally if you are half way decent you will win 15 games playing for the cards.
