I really like The Thin Red Line by terrence malick, it came out in 98 and has some similar combat scenes as private ryan. I prefer it to private ryan. The cinematography is amazing with very rich color. But its also a bit slow paced at times and might bore some who like their war movies to be non stop action. Its just under 3 hours.
