Is he defenitly finished as the O's closer? does anyone think he can do well again if he gets traded to some place like SF or Atlanta ?

He's my favorite punching bag. Apart from his stellar rookie season, he has always been crap in terms of WHIP and ERA. I don't think that any team with aspirations to win anything would ever consider him as a closer. If he ever gets a closer job again, it will be with a crummy team. Consider him to be a younger Alfonseca at this point.

He could play for the '27 Yankees and I wouldn't want him on my fantasy team. :-°

There is no way I would draft him but I believe he will end up somewhere closing again. "maybe not this year" It seems like teams keep recycling closers more than they should. Look at Benitez and Mesa last year even though I am not sure if Mesa ever lost his job.

Benitez has always been a good regular season closer.

Word around here is that BJ Ryan will be taking over the closer's role next season....we are currently shopping Julio, but if we can't get what we consider to be his "true value" in a trade, he will likely be moved to a set-up role.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.

I don't like Ryan in the closer's role at all. IMHO, he is much better suited as a lefty specialist/setup guy out of the pen.

I can see your point....in fact Ryan was given a chance to close toward the end of the season and he struggled a bit. I don't think there is any doubt that both Julio and Ryan have closer stuff, however, the correct mental makeup for the job seems to be something some guy have and others don't.....I personally think that Ryan can handle the job....he made huge stride last season when he was given the responsibility of being the "setup man" facing both right and left handed batters. I think Ryan proved that he can handle guys on both sides of the plate (although he is still better against lefties), whether he can handle the 9th inning is yet to be seen.

yeah. i think ryan will end up closing for the O's, but i'd prolly stay away from him and from julio. i'd let someone else take a chance on them, even though i kinda like ryan. i still have nightmares about rhodes and dotel :-b
