Unit or Hudson??

Which would you rather have next year? Please consider financial considerations and the "likely price" that each player would cost the Cardinals to get the player you want.

You can also figure in long term. Hudson is signed through 2005.

Just for next year I would take Johnson. But I voted for Hudson. Both are FA after 2005 but I would imagine the Cards would resign Hudson. Plus his 2005 salary is probally $10 million less than Johnson's. I would bet either one is going to take some good prospects to get.

Hudson. His age and demeanor seems perfectly fit for this team.

I point that out because I am not so sure that the Unit would be good for clubhouse chemistry. I'm not basing that comment on anything other than my gut, but he doesn't strike me as a very team-oriented kind of guy.

That's a no brainer for me. Hudson all the way. If RJ was maybe 5-6 years younger then I'd take him, but Hudson has to have quite a few more good years left than RJ at this point.

there is no way of knowing who we would have to give up to get either of those guys, and if you dont know what the cost is there is no good way to answer that question.

That's an understatement. Just the fact that you will have to deal with Billy Beane is reason enough to go for the Unit over Hudson. Walt's pretty shrewd, though, so I don't think he'll get had on any trade he makes for any pitcher within the next year.

I mean, c'mon. This is a guy that got Rolen for Bud Smith and Polanco. What a steal!

whatever one we could get that doesnt involve giving up haren, ankiel, reyes, or barton would be the one i would pick.

i dont have any problem trading some combination of marquis, calero, wainwright, thomson, gall and so on. i dont think that will get it done though.

Everyone is going to be asking for Haren or Ankiel at the least. I think trading both is flat out stupid. I like Calero, but he is just a right-handed reliever. There are plenty more of those where he came from, and they aren't always good every year. So I could see trading either Haren or Ankiel with Calero. There's no way anyone is getting all three, though.

I agree 100%. There's no way you can give up Haren and Ankiel. I would hate to give up either of them, but if it does land Hudson I think it would be worth it. Dealing with Beane though is usually not a good thing for the team not named the A's though. :-°
