He still puts up numbers every year...I won't buy that one. Mine is Andruw Jones. He is a perenial .265-35-100-8 player. You say "Hey that's pretty good", but so much more was expected of him. The speed never developed, the patience never developed, he goes through prolonged slumps. People still draft him thinking he will blossom, I don't see it happening.
I wonder if it could be Arod. I think the casual fan especially overrates him because of that contract - but last year he finished something like 30somethingth in OPS.
Helton I'd agree with if he weren't playing in Coors. But he is and he does put up the numbers.
Other contenders: Nomar Garciaparra, Mike Piazza, Sammy Sosa. Basically, I'm thinking of guys who have histories of being just fantastic but have slipped a good bit in recent years. And yet they still have those big reputations.
Are we talking about most overrated fantasy player or most overrated in real life?
Because if it's real life, Andruw's glove alone makes him that valuable. If it's fantasy, then I wouldn't say Andruw is overrated. I don't know anyone that's "high" on him. If anything, now is a good buy-low time. I don't think Andruw is one of the best hitters, but I also don't think he's simply lost the ability to place thirty-five over the fence. He just needs to work on not aiming there all the time.
