This stinks. Guillen was supposed to come to NY.

Oh, well.

I think the Mets were gun shy about taking on Guillen. I guess Ramon Ortiz and Erstad are still a possibility but I read that Erstad has a no-trade contract for three teams two of which are the NY teams.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Mets fans should be happy that they avoided Bobby Bonilla II.

As for the Angels, I am assuming that Rivera will get the call in CF with Figgins as the fill-in 2B. I would expect that this scotches their sign Cabrera/move Eckstein to 2B plans. I think they will focus on a DH now to round things out.

For Figgins, not so bad--he will probably start off the year at 2B and the high chance that McPherson will stink or another injury will occur means that he will probably be able to stay in the line-up all year.

Rivera is suddenly looking like a good sleeper. Given how Soscia likes to run, .285 15/15 with a bunch of Rs and RBIs (depending on where he hits) does not seem too far off the mark in terms of expectations.

neither did I....the washington franchise sure is trying to make some waves early so far in the off season.......but as far as figgins i think this will keep his value high as he will probably still be playing a couple of different positions......

This should turn Rivera's value even higher than it is. A couple people had him penciled as a sleeper in Washington. Now as long as he gets PT he could be a hot commodity.

The left side of that infield is way overpaid, and on top of that, is downright bad. Guzman got paid on the basis of his 2001 first half, which convinced everyone that he has an untapped upside. Worse, Castilla's 2004 Coors split is substantial:

Castilla - AVG OBP SLG
Coors - .321 .379 .575
Elsewhere - .218 .281 .493

The Ex-Spos just paid over $20 million for six combined seasons of those two guys? Ouch.

Agreed, that left side of the infield is horrible. Neither will hit better than your average rookie, and neither is good in the field :-P

At least they can embarass themselves south of the border this year :-b
