DUSTY OR FELIPE?

Postby Lt Columbo » Tue Apr 22, 2003 7:02 pm

I am a Giants fan, so I wasn't happy to see Dusty Baker go, but with Felipe managing, I am liking his coaching decisions a little more than Dusty. One thing that I like that Felipe did, that Dusty would never do, is pull the closer in the 9th when he is in a jam. Tim Worrell was trying to get the save against Milwaulkee a couple weeks ago, and he allowed 2 runs, so the Giants were only ahead 6-5 now, with 2 outs. Felipe goes to the bullpen to bring in Scott Eyre to get the lefty Vander Waal out. It proved to be the right decisions as Vander Waal popped out on the second pitch. Dusty would never have pulled Worrell or Nen whoever was closing. Dusty always left the fate of the game ly in the closers hands. Time and time again Robb Nen last season had the winning runs on base in the 9th inning and Dusty left him in there. Most times Nen was able to get out of the jam, but he cost the Giants a couple games. I want to hear everyone's opinions on the two managers, which you like better, which is better, and all sorts of stuff like that.

dusty was a good coach though, look at the cubs this year, whole new attitude. that said I think Felipe was a fine decision.

Dusty = Had Rob Nen as his closer.

Felipe = Doesn't not have Rob Nen as his closer for the time being.

That was probably a bigger factor than Felipe being more willing to pull his closer. I wouldn't bet on Felipe pulling out a healthy Nen if he gets in a jam. More likely he will do what every other manager with a legit top-shelf closer will do, let the big guy do his job.
