Will he be the closer for the cubbies next year or not? I know he had some problems but I think he still has the stuff to be the closer. Has anyone heard anything or have an idea of what will happen?
Chicago Sun Times reported that the Cubs were going to make a bid for Benitez.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
It's extremely unlikely, they will most likely aquire a closer this offseason whether it be Benitez, Percival or someone else is the better question.
Also, if they weren't to acquire a closer in the offseason it's been hinted at that they would give Dempster a shot to close.
I don't think Hawkins closes next year. The Twins tried it. It didn't work. The Cubs tried it. It didn't work. I can't imagine the Cubs would give him another chance to close unless there were no other options.

That's what I was thinking. He's a helluva setup man, so why not put him back in that role and find someone else to close? I think they'll go after someone, like Mustangs said, the real question is who.
I think that the results with Hawkins closing last year, were mixed, at best. With the Cubbies financial capabilities I would think that they would look at Benitez or Percival.
IMO, Dennis Eckersley has more of a chance to close next year than Hawkins. The cubs would do better to try and sign percival (Benitez and the Curse???), and see what they can get for Hawk on the market. Several teams are looking for middle/set-up guys (Cubs included). I just don't think Hawkins is Cub material and it wouldn't suprise me if he is moved to another team before spring training.
Cub Fans are loyal, but they have little patience. Wrigley field is a horrible place to play if the fans have lost faith in you.
So, I'll just take a guess here, but, I'll say Hawkins ends up in Cleveland setting up for Benitez.
