I'm trying to develop a rankings forumla for the first time and just wanted a little feedback on the results. I've only run it on 1B right now, and listed the top 25 based on one of my league's settings -- (R HR RBI SB BB BA). Just wondering what everyone thinks becuase I think the top 5-10 are pretty good. BTW it's just based on last years numbers ('04).
If I remember correctly my rankings are quite different from your's, but I'm not completely sure at the moment. They could be different 'cuz I used standard 5x5 for my rankings. I took a formula that I believe was posted by matmat, altered it just a bit so that it worked the way I wanted it too, and used the forumula along with my predictions in a spreadsheet to come up with my rankings. I don't have the rankings with me at the moment 'cuz I'm at the university comp. lab, but send me a pm with how you came up with your rankings and I'll try help you from there.
I always thought a good way to go about rankings would be to assign a percentage of the league total for each category to each player. I'm just generating random numbers, but say if David Ortiz stole 100 bases and your entire league totaled 1000 stolen bases, Oritz would score 0.10 in SB. You could then add the totals together to get a players score.
Two problems instantly come to mind with that method, however.
One is how on Earth would you work averages like AVG and ERA. You can't devide them against league average, or have them be on the same scale as the other categories (every player's total added together wouldn't equal 1).
The second, the rankings wouldn't reflect which categories your team was already strong in. You could keep on drafting power hitters that scored well in both RBI and HR but hurt you in AVG and SB because their overall totals combine each category into one generic number.
Hey baseballer, do you think you could pm me the methodology you use to rank players? I'm in an AL only keeper with 12 teams, and need all the edge I can get...

Those were completely by the stats from last year, (and my apparent misinterpretation of them ) I knew this rankings thing was too much work, I just need a dartboard and a list of eligible players.
