btw, Mattingly was a great player who didn't have a great career because of injury. But during that 6 year stretch, he was easily one of the best hitters in baseball .. dont look at the numbers, because this was before the dawn of steroids and the offensive explosion of the 90's. at the time there was Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, and Don Mattingly ..

i agree as well....mattingly was as good as there was for about 5 or 6 years, but saying that dale murphy was also as good a player as there was in baseball for about 5 years or so and he did not make it to the hall of fame either...so i cant say for certain that mattingly would have made it to the hall without the injury.......
