I'm finally coming into the 20th century (yes I know I said 20th) and am getting DSL for my apartment. I know I need a firewall, and Windows XP has one but is it really good enugh? Or is it like usual Windows things and you should use something different? I wasn't wanting to spend a whole lot of $$ so if there are any good cheap ones out there or even reputable free ones that would be great. Thanks for the help.

Zone Alarm is #1 for sure, it's totally awesome....Here's the link. I know you'll like it.
Personally, I use Black Ice. It's $39.95 at that site. You might be able to find it at a better price somewhere else though.

The firewall that comes built-in Windows XP SP2 is just fine for personal/home use IMO. It doesn't have all the options or extras of a prog like Zone Alarm but if you just want something that does it's job with minimum hassle I like it.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

I have no issues using programs at all. Black Ice tells me exactly what the program is and asks me if I want to allow it to run. I simply click "yes" and presto, both program and firewall up and running at the same time.

Why are you paying for this Mad lol.... I swear the FREE Zone Alarm does the EXACT same thing... Identifies the program, asks you to allow or deny the program to run, plus you can save the option so the pop-up for the same program you always want to allow (IE, Mozilla) doesn't pop up again. Plenty of other options provided to allow you to customize your firewall as well.
i don't even use a firewall. when i shared a computer with my brother we used a firewall and i found it annoying, blocking everything (guess that's what it's supposed to do, eh? ). now that i have my own computer i don't even have a firewall, the only security tools i use are ad-aware and spy-bot, along with some other smaller programs to prevent registry keys to be changed on my computer without my permission, which pretty much does the job against trojans and spyware
