If we are simply talking in terms of hitting prowess, then I would have to say Hornsby with Foxx a very close second. My top 5 would be

Funny thing is that I confused myself, somewhere between saying best "hitter" ever and posting my list I started thinking about overall offensive players (which is the list I posted). Hornsby would drop to #3 on my list in pure hitters and Foxx would be #1. I'll try this again three ways.

the only player EVER righty or lefty to hit 400 in a season and 40 homeruns in a season... (almost did it twice, another season hit 400 and 39 longs balls)

holds the modern era record for batting average in a season (424)


and to top it off he was a second baseman

argue against him as being the greatest right handed offensive player...

If we are talking about just hitting I could see the arguement for Foxx over Hornsby but he is the only one IMO.

Hornsby played when batting averages were going crazy, unlike any period since 1900. between 1920-1930 eight players hit above 400. Since 1930, one player has hit above 400.

Im going to have to say Foxx (peak) or Aaron (career).

As a hitter there is definitely an argument.

The ten year average for the players which was pretty much the entirety of Hornsby productive career.

Foxx - .342 BA / .447 OBP / .657 SLG / 1.104 OPS / 42 HR / 105 BB / 140 RBI
Hornsby - .382 BA / .457 OBP / .637 SLG / 1.094 OPS / 25 HR / 75 BB / 115 RBI

As far as the entire career numbers go, while Hornsby holds a 30 point lead over Foxx in BA, their OBP is only 3 points in Hornsby's favor and Foxx owns a 20 point SLG advantage.
