Ethics Situation.

Postby matmat » Sun Oct 03, 2004 1:00 pm

This came up in my yahoo h2h public league. I got to the final playing the game "right," so to speak.
We had a situation in our league where some schmuck dropped his roster after he failed to make the playoffs. The regular season winner and I agreed not to pick up any of those players and, in fact, neither of us did. Through either brilliant managment (nah) or luck we both made it to the playoff finals. After about 3 days, when my era climbed to about 9 after ca. 30IP I decided to punt the ratios and go for the countables, so I started spot-starting two or so pitchers per day. At no point did I pick up any of the "dropped" players. I also picked up a few batters for today to make sure that I had a full lineup -- not all the studs play the last game of the season, you know. Anyhow, the guy is really upset with me and is yelling at me that I should be playing with just my 21 person roster and not pocking up players like crazy. . . I probably made about 30 moves the last week and a half.

what are your thoughts on this?

Sounds like to me as long as you didn't pick up any of the agreed "no pickup" players he has no argument really. :-?

I've made 20 moves in the last 24 hours.

I think it's fine.

I can't believe this morality issue keeps coming up or that anyone should have a problem with this.

Call it player churning or whatever but in my opinion all it amounts to is maximizing your rosters potential each day. Anyone even half interested in winning their league makes roster moves of some kind. Making one move, ten moves or twenty moves in a day to genuinely improve your team in my mind is exactly the same thing.

I have to agree with you. I see nothing wrong. One of my championship rounds I was up 5-4 and we were tied with 6 SB each. I had Freel and he got hurt and Womack, and he got hurt. Yesterday I picked up Reyes, and today he steals 3 bases in one game, giving me a 7-3 win for the championship. It's all about looking over your team and deciding what's best. If you didn't pick up any of the "off limit" players, than you played fair and won fair.

Quantity over quality at work there. Perfect example why I refuse to play a public H2H league.

I understand both sides of the coin. He's upset because H2H was designed to pit two teams against each other. Not one team vs. the other team plus the entire free agent pool. I do see why he's upset.

On the other hand, it's a public league and the rules are not in place (yet) to stop the tactic that you used.

So it's basically up to you on how you feel about the win. Personally, I dislike the practice and the win would feel hollow because my team did not actually beat his team. It's up to you on how you feel about the win though.
