Pick the NL Cy Young candidate!

Postby RayD » Sat Oct 02, 2004 12:26 am

Time for your favorite, the good ol' "Pitcher A, Pitcher B" game!

Here are stat lines for two pitchers, one of which is a strong NL Cy Young contender, the other of which isn't really part of the Cy Young discussion at all. Guess which is which!

Pitcher A: 228.0 IP, 0.98 WHIP, 2.80 ERA, 253 K, 31 BB

Pitcher B: 214.1 IP, 1.16 WHIP, 2.98 ERA, 218 K, 79 BB

Give up? Pitcher B will probably win the Cy Young. It's Roger Clemens, who had a hell of a year, but got a lot of run support on his way to a nice W/L record.

Pitcher A got crap all for run support and thus has a crap W/L record. He was probably the second best starter in the NL this year though. (Number one not being Roger Clemens.)

Yes, player A is Sheets. A very nice year out of him ;-D , shame he didn't get more run support. :-/

Sheets' K/BB ratio is absolutely filthy. If only the Mets had him... ;-D

A pitcher's park with Rick Peterson as his coach? You can basically write him the Cy Young Award before the season.

Why didn't you include the Big Unit's numbers in this comparison? :-? I don't know exactly what they are, but I would have to think they would compare favorably :-° Talk about a pitcher with no run support ... :~( Milwaukees offens looks like the '27 Yankees next to the minor league lineups the D-Backs put out :-P

Peavy's outing last night made him eligible for the ERA title, so why isn't he eligible for Cy Young considerations? Other than Santana, noone has pitched better than him this year, IMO.

Lets throw the Unit's number into the mix...

237.2 IP .89 WHIP 2.65 ERA 282K's 44BB's

Now that's the Cy Young in my eyes...

Well, I'm already on record as saying Johnson should get the NL Cy Young -- I think that thread is still on the front page. And Johnson is part of the discussion regardless. He probably won't win it, but at least he's getting a lot of consideration.

My point here was to compare the stats of the Cy Young favorite to a guy who's getting NO consideration--Sheets. It's a given that Clemens hasn't been as good as Johnson this year. But I also defy anybody to argue that Clemens has been a better pitcher than Sheets this year.

Forgetting for a second who should win the award, I like the fact that who will win it still seems to be up for grabs. What if Schmidt throws a two hit shutout at Dodger Stadium tomorrow to clinch a playoff spot for the Giants? That would loom large in the voters' minds. What if Clemens gets shelled tomorrow on three days rest in a must-win situation? What if Randy Johnson throws a gem today? Good times!

Good times indeed!

(I'd give it to Johnson, but I'm assuming Clemens will wind up with the hardware.)

I'd liked to have seen what Peavy would have done with another 50 innings or so. His name would certainly be up for NL Cy Young consideration then, IMO.
