I'm not positive, but I think it's because he didn't pitch a full inning, which you have to to qualify for a save (Unless the tieing run is either on deck, at bat, or on base.)

He did get the save. 17th save in 18 chances according to Yahoo.

Interesting.. ex
specially since Yahoo's box score doesn't show a save. I'll keep checking to see if he gets the S. B-)

from the rules section of The Baseball Almanac site
http://baseball-almanac.com/rule10.shtml

SAVES FOR RELIEF PITCHERS

10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and

(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

(a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or

(b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or

(c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

I don't think he qualified since he pitched 2/3 of an inning and there was not anyone on base

He did not pitch a full inning and the on-deck batter was never the tying run, so no save.

This was not a save situation. The Yahoo recap was wrong.

Looking at the Yahoo report I assumed he had pitched the entire 9th. You guys are correct, if there was no one on and he came into the game with a 3 run lead, then he needs to pitch at least 1 inning to get the save.

Huge ruling for me as my playoff opponent has him. Marte got me the Hold never the less. Big, Big! Funny though how Takasu doesn't even get a hold.
