Some of the top minor league callups this year

Postby mcqfesijiba » Sat Apr 19, 2003 10:21 am

Already here: Mark Teixeira(3B-Tex), Jesse Foppert(P-SF)

Coming real soon: Jose Reyes(SS-NYM), Rich Harden(P-Oak), Rafael Soriano (P-Sea)

Late season/September: Justin Morneau(1B-Min), Adrian Gonzalez(1B-Fla)

This is a very incomplete list. Any others in an attempt to bring life into this board?

Atkins might be brought up to Colorado earlier than many expected. If he gets playing time in the big leagues, he could worth a serious look.

Some more:

Victor Martinez (C-Cle) - He's not playing great right now, but it's only a matter of time. He will probably be up sometime in the second half.

Chad Tracy (3B-Ari) - Could be a very solid hitter. Currently blocked by Matt Williams and Craig Counsell. Could be up at any time, because Williams or/and Counsell will get hurt.

Joe Borchard (OF-CHW) - They really want him to cut down on his strikeouts, but he may be doing that at the big league level. Should be up in the second half, Aaron Rowand is just keeping his spot warm. Although both Carlos Lee and Armando Rios has been playing well, so they may be very patient with Borchard or make a trade to clear room.

Aaron Heilman (P-NYM) - He could be a very solid pitcher, but maybe not this year. He will probably be up in the second half.

Adam LaRoche- 1B The Atlanta Braves could bring him up soon. He's currently at AAA Richmond and has been fantastic

Johnny Estrada- C The Braves dealt Millwood for him, so he's got to be worth something. I espect they'll call him up later this season.

Wilson Betemit- SS He was once rated the Braves' top prospect, lets see what happens here....

Miguel Cabrera was also brought up a little while ago for the Marlins...should be solid in the future.

With Adrian Gonzalez went to Texas, it looks like Stokes is the Marlin's 1B of the future.

What does anyone know and think about Jody Gerut of the Cleveland Indians? This is my first year in a keeper league and was watching this guy lately.

Gerut looks very promising. He finnished the season very well for the tribe. He finished the season at .279/ 22 HR/ 75 RBI. Pretty good rookie numbers. He also had 33 doubles which indicates he is a line drive hitter who finds gaps. I'll look at him pretty seriously in our draft next spring. ;-D

Aaron Heilman (P-NYM) - He could be a very solid pitcher, but maybe not this year. He will probably be up in the second half.

Rob Hammock (C-AZ) - He played almost daily the last couple of months of the season. The D-Backs used him at corner and in the OF to keep his bat in the order. Could be an excellent pick next spring. Though not a late call up, Matt LeCroy is another player who had enough appearances at catcher to be eligible at that position in most formats (21). His hitting skills are excellent and he has multi-position eligibility as well, 1B, DH. The Twins want his bat in there.

Doug Waechter (P-TB) Came up in August and finished 3-2 with an ERA in the low 3.00's. He had 29 K's in 35 IP.

Edwin Jackson (P-LA) Came up in Sept and pitched 7 inn of SO ball against the D-backs in his first appearance. Throws up to 98 MPH! Too bad the Dodgers don't get any runs or he could be fantastic!

There are lots of others, but I'll stop here to see if there are any comments about these or any someone else wants to add. B-)
