Here's a bit of background: this manager had been criticized harshly by the press for his lineups, provoking him to challenge those ridiculing him to set the lineup themselves. He then picked one of the submitted lineups and used it in a game.

His team held a lead going into the ninth inning, but with two men on and two out the left fielder - whom the journalist had placed there, away from his regular position - badly misplayed a fly ball, which wound up costing the team the game, and sent the manager rushing to the press box in a rage.

Casey Stengel when he managed the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The "Babe" he was referring to was Babe Phelps who was a catcher but in 1936 played one game in the outfield.
