According to published reports, Edgar Martinez has decided to retire from baseball effective immediately. With Seattle changing their focus from winning to rebuilding, the 41-year old Martinez became expendable. Bucky Jacobsen will likely take over every designated hitter duties for the remainder of the season.

while the second one (the link above) said that he would be waiting til the end of the season.
sorry for the mix up. I am not sure which one is accurate at this point.
Edgar Martinez will retire at the end of the season, he announced at a press conference today. Very good. The Mariners figure to give Edgar the sendoff he deserves next month, playng him regularly down the stretch. Aug. 9 - 5:35 pm et
I'm watching the press conference now and, yes, he'll finish out the season. He's been the glue on all the good Mariner teams since '95. It's sad that he has to finish out a good career on such a terrible team. It's also a bummer that he couldn't end on a better year.
2003: .294/.406/.489
2004: .258/.352/.387
Now we here in Seattle will see if Edgar has done enough to make the Hall of Fame.
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'

This is a sentence that will get us here in seattle pretty lit up. How can you say that he is one of the greatest (although i could argue greatest) at his position ever. And then turn around in the same sentence and say he doesn't go to the hall.
If in fact he is the greatest at his position. how can you not send him.

how can you not send him? esy, look at the numbers. they're very good, but not hof material. there's nothing spectacular there.
would you vote Galarraga into the hof? prolly not right (I would, cuz he's my fav). looking at the numbers though, they're very similar, plus the big cat has 2 gold gloves.
i know that's just one comparison, but, with those numbers i don't think he deserves to get in.
