Felipe Lopez = late bloomer?

I couldn't get anyone to comment on Lopez in another thread, so maybe this might do it. Lopez is 2-3 with a HR and a walk tonight and is hitting .343 with 4 homers, 5 doubles, 5 walks and 4 strikeouts. 32 AB.

I keep bringing him up because he is oh-so-tempting. He was chosen 8th overall in the 1998 draft, and has been a classic bust player ever since. But this recent swing sheds some hope on what has been a sorry situation. The walks and XBH are especially promising. Still only 24.

He has looked good for the last couple of days but 5 walks and 23 SO's in 75 at bats (before tonight) don't bode well for future success unless your name is Alfonso Soriano. It is a very small sample size though and he is still young so maybe that will improve.

These 32 AB I refer to have come since he was recalled 3 weeks ago. Who knows, maybe something finally clicked in AAA after scuffling in his 1st try with Cincy earlier in 04.

Damn I thought this was about Felipe Lopez the basketball player, AKA the next Michael Jordan coming out of High School. Used to be my favourite player, now he's retired or something.......

As for the baseball version........ he's been bad his whole career and 3 of his 4 HR's are in extreme HR hitting parks....... 2 in Coors, one in Cinci. Granted, his home park is GAB, but I don't think he's a very good offensive player at all. Guys like him and Orlando Hudson were drafted as big defensive prospects and fantasy guys expect them to be great offensively as well. Hudson is one of the best 2B's out there in real life, but since he only hits 10 HR a year and has a bad BAA, people think he was a flop. He's great defensively though, and I'd like to see him remain a Jay for a long time. As for Lopez, not sure if he's as good defensively, but it doesn't really matter for us fantzsy players What matters is that he can't hit a ball if his life depends on it. I'd avoid him for sure, unless it's for a deep NL only league. Even then he'd still only be on my radar (well, especially since I don't need a SS with my recent Nomar waiver pickup )
