Smoltz

Postby Longhorns76 » Sun Aug 01, 2004 9:16 pm

Anyone else notice that he has been a save machine in the last week. I think I saw seven saves in the last nine games? Not too bad, I knew he would start getting them but I didn't expect to see them at this rate. Hopefully he can get a couple of days off to "rest" then have another 7 in just over a week. Oh course I'm being greedy. So we can put to rest any "John Smoltz is a bust" or "John Smoltz can't get saves on a crappy ATL team" talk that I saw on here. (of course I never actually saw "John Smoltz is a bust" threads ;-) ) but everyone has seen the itchy trigger fingers of some of the owners here when a players starts slow or falls into a slump (I admit it too, I have been one of them with Shawn Green).

Good job Johnie.

I was trying to sell him earlier this year because he wasn't getting saves. Now he has 25 and is among the league leaders. I'm glad I held on to him. Keep it up Smoltzy!! ;-D

Same here, but the other owners in my league ripped me for taking Smoltz (explains why I got him so late). One wouldn't accept a trade for him where I get ARTHUR RHODES! (yes, there were othger players in the deal, but that's the reason why he said no). Another said I'll be crying when his arm falls off.

Sucks for them. ;-D

I traded for him low a little while ago, thanks to the advice of someone here. Its worked out real good.

He always comes through ;-D

He's the only original member of my keeper team from 3 years ago, since he converted to a closer. People always doubt him and he's always one of the best. All he needs is save opps ;-D

I guess that patience has paid off for all of us. While Graves was getting his 30th, Smoltz was like at 8. But I had to figure the Braves would be in a lot of close games in which they would win so he had to get those chances eventually.

Author Rhodes for Smoltz??? Who was smoking crack at that time?

I figured that Smoltz was as safe a closer to choose from (I didn't buy into Foulke. I thought Wagner would have been healthy though)and it was between him and Rivera on draft day (gagne was long gone). Rivera has been his awesome self this season. Smoltz just started a little slow but now looks like his old self

Chavez (his) for Burroughs (mine) was also part of the deal in a keeper. He said he refused it b/c of the Smoltz/Rhodes part.

Remember, I offered this to him at the end of April.

Yeah going into this year I was thinking of taking Wagner as the #1 closer. Glad I went with my "take a bunch of 'mediocre' closers and keep the best 3" approach.

Didn't foresee this Wagner thing at all. I got screwed in my selection of closers in the draft so I just played the waiting game of seeing who would lose their job and snag their backup. Got Chad Cordero and Shingo out of it. Not great, but not horrible either.

His performance of late is helping to ease the pain of trading Nathan and Konerko for him awhile ago.
