1. He's hiding an career-ending injury by announcing his retirement instead
2. He realized that he'd rather have a long life than a long career
3. He knows he's set for life with the money he has and just wants to relax for the next 30-40 years

Seriously though, it's a shame to waste such talent while still in the prime of life.

If he played this year he would have turned into the next Eddie George. With essentially the same team that he had in 2002, Ricky rushed for 3.5 yd/carry - very sucky.
He had the most carries in 2003, he had the most carries in 2002, over the past 3 years nobody comes close to his number of carries.
