July 13, 2004 1:20 PM ET Pirates: Mesa doesn't want to be traded
The News Jose Mesa has been the subject of trade rumors, but he wants to stay in Pittsburgh and the Pirates are reportedly reluctant to give up their closer unless they get blown away with an offer. "I like it here. I don't want to go anywhere," Mesa told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette earlier this week. Our View The Pirates won't get offered much more than a prospect for Mesa and they have no other experienced closers in line so this is one rumor that probably won't come to fruition. Kris Benson, on the other hand, is as good as gone. It's just a matter of which of the "buyers" gives the Bucs the best offer.
It may not be as bleak as a situation as some make it out to be. If you can get full value for Mesa, do it. However, I wouldn't sell him off really cheap.

There was talk about him going to Cleveland on sports talk radio here a few weeks ago. Haven't heard much about it lately though. Sorry I cannot be of more help but that is all I got.

Then, imagine that I am also a Congressman.
But, alas, I repeat myself."

There is no way you can get him for full value, because most people have some sort of vendetta at him from last year. 2 months ago everybody was yelling to sell high on Mesa, he gonna come crashing down. Well I held onto him, and I have one of the most reliable closers in baseball right now. Mesa is just proof that the strategy of waiting for mid to late round closers and stacking your rotation and offense usually pays off.
Word is right now that Mesa will stick around. The team has done very well lately and he is a fan favorite in Pittsburgh. The fans where going crazy at the game. I was sitting right behind home plate and he really looks sharp this year.
If..and only if he is traded look for Mark COrey to step in as the closer for Pittsburgh, even though I played ball with Mark Corey in college, I can say without being unbiased that he is probably the best option hey have.
Yeah, Mesa is hated on by sooo many people, that he got dropped in my league after he had almost 20 or so saves. I can't trade this guy off my team for anything.
Oh well, he goes in and gets saves without killing my ERA, so whatever, i'll keep him and enjoy the saves!

Excuse me for changing the subject a lil but correct me if I'm wrong because his name sounds really familiar but is he the dude who got the seizure in like a parking lot or something after smoking pot?
