soriano in the first round and I'm in first place about to go up by double digits. Its not rounds 1-6 that win you a league its what you do afterwards, not that Soriano is sucking or anything.
I had the 12th pick in a 14-team draft. Figuring all my main studs would be gone (they were), I planned a high-powered middle infield combo with the 12 and 17 picks, targeting Tejada and Boone.
Since the 14th (and 15th) picks were held by a well-known, inveterate Mariner fan, I grabbed Boone in round 1 and Tejada in round 2.
Yes, I admit it. But I'm 3rd right now, thanks to April waiver-wire grabs that include Dunn, Finley and Hairston Jr. (who started over Boone for much of the last month).
1st league (of 6) I'm 2nd with, having the second pick Arod
2nd league (of 12) I'm 2nd with having the third pick Arod
3rd league (of 12) I'm 1st with having the last pick, getting Manny then Helton right after
4th league (of 12) I'm 2nd having the eighth pick getting Manny, then Soriano
5th league (of 12) I'm 2nd having the 4th pick getting Vlad then Soriano
5x5 H2H 12-team Arod(1) in 1st place
5x5 H2H 12-team Guerrero(10) in 2nd place
5x5 Roto 12-team Beltran(10) in 3rd place
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
I no longer have my 1st or 2nd or 3rd round picks as I've made some BIG changes the past few weeks. But Soriano was 1st rd, Foulke was 2nd rd, Giambi was 3rd. I was in 3rd two weeks ago.. now in 5th as injuries to Hudson, Maggs, Wells, Mora and little nagging injuries to Burntiz, and Koskie all caught up to me all at once. I've lost my last two weeks and this week is a toss up right now. Although the guy I'm facing has 2 more starts left than me this weekend.
BTW, I traded Soriano,Giambi for Prior,Boone,M.Cabrera.. Traded Foulke,Dye for Maggs,C.Guillen.. Traded D.Willis for D.Lee... Traded Millwood,Jose Guillen for Zito, Podsednik. All these within the past 2 half weeks. I got Maggs when he was hurt but getting rid of Foulke while his value was still pretty high was of major concern to me. Plus I upgraded my SS with this deal by getting him to throw in Guillen.
All in all I've got no holes on my team now. And my pitching, when healthy, will be the best in the league with Schmidt, Prior, Hudson anchoring my staff. So I'm guessing I should be able to make the playoffs as I'm only 1 game out of the final spot and only 2 games out of 1st in my division.
Manny seems to have helped a lot of teams, as had Vlad. Soriano, though ranked in top 5 draft day may have been overvalued.
Not hearing positive results from drafting pitchers in first round, though if Prior was healthy all year, I could see the point of drafting him. Gagne was ranked in top and had been injury free all year.
Tejada was a must have for my teams, and depending on where I was in the draft, I took him between the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
