Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll drown because you forgot to teach him to swim.

Daily News wrote:Mets eye Smoltz for 2005

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
PHILADELPHIA - Tom Glavine called former Braves teammate Kevin Millwood last winter, trying to gauge his interest in signing with the Mets. This time, Glavine might recruit John Smoltz.
That is, if Smoltz is available. He has a $12 million option for 2005 that vests if he finishes 57 games. The Braves may not be interested in having Smoltz at that figure because of the financial obligation. The righthander has closed out 28 games.
"I still think there's a big part of him that wants to be a starting pitcher again," Glavine said. "I think this winter he's going to be willing to listen to teams that are willing to let him do that. I think it all depends on what else we end up doing. Who knows? Maybe we can get a No. 1 guy right now, sometime in the next six weeks, that catapults into next year and then you're trying to fill your rotation. If you can get a guy like Smoltzy for one year at a reasonable price, it might be worth your while."
Glavine didn't mention which No.1 starter he was referring to, but it's rumored that Oakland's Barry Zito might become available.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
