Some team advice...

Postby HYLRedSox » Sat Apr 12, 2003 4:04 pm

Basic 12 team 5x5 Yahoo roto league. Currently 8th but my team is struggling so I hope that improves soon. Here is my team:

C Pierzynski, A.J. (C-Min)
1B Klesko, Ryan (1B, RF-SD)
2B Ellis, Mark (2B-Oak)
3B Batista, Tony (3B-Bal)
SS Aurilia, Rich (SS-SF)
OF Sosa, Sammy (RF-ChC)
OF Anderson, Garret (LF-Ana)
OF Nixon, Trot (RF-Bos)
Util Sanders, Reggie (RF-Pit)
Bench Giles, Brian (LF-Pit)
Bench Hafner, Travis (DH-Cle)
Bench Blalock, Hank (3B-Tex)
Bench Roberts, Dave (CF-LA)

SP Oswalt, Roy (SP-Hou)
SP Glavine, Tom (SP-NYM)
RP Koch, Billy (RP-CWS)
RP Rhodes, Arthur (RP-Sea)
P Perez, Odalis (SP-LA)
P Wells, David (SP-NYY)
P Lowe, Derek (SP-Bos)
Bench Suppan, Jeff (SP-Pit)
DL Isringhausen, JasonDL (RP-StL)

I know Klesko is hurting, I'm waiting for Hafner to be eligible to play 1B. Just dropped Kennedy to pick up Ellis. Don't have too many saves, waiting for Izzy to get off the DL. Giles injury hurts but not too much. What suggestions do you have? I'm down like 22 points right now. Its mostly my offense at the moment. Hopefully Sammy or Anderson will get hot. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

OK, I will do a quick position by position run down.

Catcher: Pierzynski is a boring but solid catcher who should have reasonable production for you there.

First base: I think Klesko will kick out of his slump and be a top 10-15 first baseman. He'll probably hit .280 with 30 homers and 100+ RBIs so I wouldn't worry about him. I think that Hafner, even when he does get eligibility, is a far weaker first baseman than Klesko.

Second and third base: These are your two real weak spots. I don't think Ellis will be able to keep up anywhere near what he has done so far. Batista is in my opinion, a sub par third baseman to be starting in a 12 team mixed league.

Shortstop: Aurilia is rock solid, and should hit 20-30 HR and get close to 100 RBIs. He benefits from hitting in front of Bonds, meaning he gets all kinds of good pitches to hit. IMO, he is arguably the best NL shortstop so no worries here.

Outfield: You have a kicking outfield, especially when Giles comes back. Sosa-Anderson-Giles is a lethal combination.

Bench: A few concerns here. First of all, you really want to have backup options for pretty much every position on your bench as much as possible. Right now, you have no backup for 2B or SS by the looks of it. I would drop or trade Roberts, because you have Klesko who can be moved to OF in a pinch. Once Hafner has 1B eligibility, that will then give you both your OF and 1B backup. In Roberts' place, I would pickup a SS that has a starting job from waivers. An option to give you a 2B and 3B eligible backup in one player would be to pickup D'Angelo Jiminez from waivers, who is eligible at both positions and is the White Sox's leadoff hitter. Then, when Giles is back, you can trade or dump either Nixon or Sanders and get a backup catcher. Having backup really helps you in Yahoo leagues with daily lineup changes, because it often lets you accumulate stats at a position when your primary starter has the day off.

Rotation: You have three solid pitchers in Oswalt, Perez and Glavine. Lowe should be good but I am a bit concerned about his start and his blister problems and think he may have peaked last year. If you can, I would see if someone will trade you Lowe for another top 10-15 starter. Wells should also be solid and being on the strong Yankees team will guarantee him lots of wins even if he slightly struggles. Although, I would be a bit worried about him getting injured given his history. I can't comment on Suppan, not familiar with him.

Bullpen:
Koch is a solid closer, who should easily notch 30+ saves. The most recent news on Isringhausen is that he won't be back until at least early May, possibly later. Since Sasaki has the Mariner's closing job, I would think Rhodes would be of limited value. I would look to dump him for another closer or temporary closer that might be on waivers. If MacDougal is on waivers, grab him, he has 6 saves already for KC. If not, Kline in StL and Worrell in SF are temporary closers that could pick up extra saves for you while Izzy is out.

Overall, this team looks great. Excellent balance between pitching and offense, strong rotation, strong outfield, just a somewhat weak infield.

OK:
The only available closers in my league that have notched any saves so far this season are:
Borowski, Joe (RP-ChC)
Anderson, Matt (RP-Det)
Service, ScottNA (RP-Ari)
Eyre, Scott (RP, SP-SF)
Lidge, Brad (RP-Hou)
Fox, Chad (RP-Bos)
Hermanson, Dustin (RP-StL)
Brower, Jim (RP-SF)
Orosco, Jesse (RP-SD)
Carrasco, D.J. (RP-KC)
Bradford, Chad (RP-Oak)
Neither Kline or Worrell are available. I don't know what to go with here, if anything. Perhaps Lidge? But with Wagner probably not. Maybe Fox, part of "The Committee."

As for 3B, available players include:
Wigginton, Ty (3B-NYM)
Jimenez, D'Angelo (2B, 3B-CWS)
Zeile, Todd (3B-NYY)
Beltre, Adrian (3B-LA)
Alfonzo, Edgardo (3B-SF)
Randa, Joe (3B, DH-KC)
Castilla, Vinny (3B-Atl)
Williams, Matt (3B-Ari)
Bellhorn, Mark (2B, 3B, 1B-ChC)
Tatis, Fernando (3B-Mon)
Mueller, Bill (3B-Bos)
Cirillo, Jeff (3B-Sea)
Teixeira, Mark (3B-Tex)
I'm thinking of picking up Wigginton, and you said Jimenez, so that would be good option. Bellhorn's average just killer, but he is eligible at so many places. Will Fonzy ever become the "Barry Protector" that he was supposed to be? And I really like Teixeira, but I already have the other Texas 3B-of-the-future.

The second base pool is pretty empty, but:
Catalanotto, Frank (LF, 2B, 1B-Tor)
Anderson, Marlon (2B-TB)
Stynes, Chris (3B, 2B-Col)
Hairston Jr., Jerry (2B-Bal)
Grudzielanek, Mark (2B-ChC)
I'm thinking of grabbing Hairston for his steals, or possible Grudzielanek.

Well this is my evaluation so far, let me know what you guys think. And jdh, thanks for that very thourough evaluation. I really appreciate it.

Out of those relievers, Matt Anderson looks very good. His numbers aren't gaudy thanks to a rough start, but the job is his for now. I'd pick him up in a heartbeat.

Nice team! ;-D

OK well thanks for the feedback so far. This is who I am thinking of picking up. I want to pick up Anderson, I've heard good things about him. And IF the Tigers win, he should get some saves.
Although Batista isn't horrible, I do want to pick up either Wigginton or Jimenez, and perhaps Hairston. What do you think? Who should I pick up and who should I drop? I have some ideas but would like (again) to know what you think. I am thinking of dropping Blalock, perhaps Roberts.

Your team

Postby Dave » Sun Apr 13, 2003 11:32 pm

I'd put Bellhorn at 2B for the power.
Definitely get Matt Anderson, even though Detroit keeps losing.
Blaylock should do well at 3B; Alfonso too due to the Bonds factor; or Bellhorn.
I'm also partial to Baldelli, though your outfield is solid already.

Is Chacon for real? What about Choi? Clayton? Any ideas how to give my team a good kick right in the rear?
