However, managers no longer have complete control over who goes to the All Star Game. According to an article I read (see below): "McKeon and his American League counterpart, Joe Torre, only got to make seven selections each. The fans voted in the starting lineup and a vote of players, coaches and managers took up 16 other spots, including pitchers." Same goes for these sub's.
WHIP is the same, Vaz has a better ERA. I don't think this is a biased decision, since IMO Vaz has been better. I'm glad he took who he thought was better (presumably) instead of taking Pedro just so people wouldn't question his decision.
You chowder heads are paranoid.
"Jack, will you call me, if you're able?"
"I've got your phone number written, in the back of my Bible."
the numbers are pretty close. so i dont think its unfair but in my eyes i think theres a slightly better case for Pedro. Perdo "wins" in every single category here 'cept era and walks.
... at least its not rhidiculously stupid like Giambi getting selected as the starting 1B.
Manny Ramirez....$20 million
Pedro Martinez....$17.5 million
Curt Schilling...$12 million (and a $2 million bonus)
Never hearing a Yankee fan chant 1918 again...priceless.
It's hard to call Torre biased when the decision is that close. Also, what is Vazquez's run support compared to Pedro? I tried looking but couldn't find anything. I know earlier in the year Vazquez had one of the worst run support.
well, he IS the coach of the YANKEES. why SHOULD he pick Pedro? How would that go over back at the home office? Think George would be happy with that selection? Screw the stats - Joe knows what he's doing. Selecting Vaz gives his young stud confidence, which is exactly what he needs going into the 2nd half. Joe knows Pedro will do just fine without his help. Joe also knows, he just made Vaz THAT much better, simply be selecting him.

Well Giambi, Matsui, Jeter and A-Rod were all voted to the team. I doubt Torre would've taken all of them if given the chance. The only ones he selected were Rivera, Sheff, Gordon and now Vazquez, and there's a case for every one of them to be there.
Also, bogie made a good point. I bet Rivera and Sheff were both voted by managers and players because of their great years, and maybe Vazquez as well. You really don't know exactly what Torre picked.
Joe just explained it on the post game on YES. Pedro was actually next on the list but asked not to go because he had made plans so they went with who came after him which was Javy.
heard he has a hair appointment.
