Gathright Part Duex

Postby klvrdude » Thu Jul 08, 2004 8:20 pm

Does anyone have a clue as to when he might rejoin the D-Rays?

From Rotoworld this morning:
"Since he was demoted to Triple-A Durham last week, Joey Gathright has hit .529 (9-for-17 over four games) and stolen five bases.
He did not embarrass himself while he was in Tampa and he's lighting it up once again in the minors. Gathright will be back.

Gathright, Crawford would potentionally be the best 1-2 combo in baseball.

Fastest? Yes. Best? Not even close. They probably wouldn't even be in the top 10. Unless Gathright could pull off a .400 OBA, the wouldn't stand a chance at 1-2 punches as mediocre as Burroughs-Loretta. Not to mention awesome ones like Young-Blalock.

What Crawford/Gathright, would not be in the top 10 best 1-2 punches in baseball? Are you a comedian? That's potentially 125 SB at the top of your line-up with two .300 hitters. That means Baldelli, Huff, and Cruz will be seeing TONS of great pitches because chances are one of these guys are either A) on first base with the potential to steal or B) on second base after a steal.

Crawford/Gathright would NO DOUBT be the best 1-2 punch in baseball.
It's easy, fun, and 100% safe!

No doubt, LOL.

BA's mean nothing, OBA is what matters in real baseball. And they don't get on bsae nearly as much as guys like Young-Blalock. Lots of SB's doesn't make you a good leadoff hitter. They can, however, make a bad leadoff hitter into one that will suffice, which is the case with Crawford.

You are right in that On Base Percentage means 100x more than BA. But as far as fantasy goes.... I'm picking up this kid when he comes back up.

Did you hear about the way he was discovered? Jumping over cars in a parking lot? :-D

Yeah he could jump over cars lengthwise I think. It's in his contract that he's not allowed to do it anymore :-D

If he can hit around .300 he'll be a huge fantasy asset in 2005+. "Carl Crawford Part Deux", if you will........ :-b

I really think he's gonna have the Alex Sanchez batting average... the one that is waaay too high, because you legout bunt singles and infield hits all day.

Oh good lord...here we go with the Moneyball thing again.

A speedy 1-2 punch can be just as effective as a high OBP 1-2 punch. Why? Because they will wreak havoc on the other team. The threat of a steal will take so much of the pitcher's attention. They won't even bother looking at the hitter, instead they will be glancing at Gathright and CC out of the corner of their eye. What will this cause? Bad pitches, speedier delivery out of the stretch. It ruins concentration. It ruins timing. Worst case scenario, they'll chuck a lot of fastballs to make it easier to throw them out if they run. Now, who can't hit a fastball? Having speedy guys in front of you makes it easier to hit. They set the table. It's what Pierre and Castillo did last year.

Trust me, in the era of stats, stuff is left out. The simple threat of a steal is a masterful duel of chess that will never be scored on stat sheets unless a guy actually attempts the SB, but the threat of it there will totally change the game.

Now, the OBP guy may get on base, but without the threat of the steal, the pitcher can concentrate on the batter fully. Without the SB, they have to get a big hit to drive them in.

It's hard to say which is better, but at the top of the order, I'd rather have my speedsters.
