First Manager Fired This Year!

Postby Patella Tendon » Fri Jul 02, 2004 3:06 pm

Bob Brenly was fired Friday as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are struggling with the third-worst record in the National League.

The move was anticipated after weeks of poor play. The Diamondbacks had lost 11 in a row before winning their last two games against San Diego.
"This is never an easy decision to make, particularly with someone as well-liked and respected as Bob," said Jerry Colangelo, the team's chairman and chief executive.

any guesses who's next?

That's too bad. From what I hear he's a class act too, makes it that much worse. :,-(

Does this mean RJ could be the next to go? Are they giving up on the season?

Managers are like QB's I guess, get too much credit when things go well, and too much of the blame when things go south....oh well. :-[

Well, if the Astros don't pick up the pace soon, Jimy WIlliams hopefully won't be too far behind. A fantasy manager can hope, right? Maybe if the 'Stros fall below .500, that will be the straw that breaks the camel's back

They're 4th place in the Central right now... :-D....Granted, I'm a Cub fan hoping the Astros self-destruct and don't come back, knowing full well they should come back even with Williams around.

Back to Brenly:
I never thought Brenly was a very good manager (overrated may be a better way to put it). I have much more respect for Showalter, the manager he replaced in AZ, over him. As a Hairston owner, I'm hoping they trade Alomar sooner rather than later. Hopefully the new manager is a Hairston fan.

Tough situation. I don't think there is any manager in baseball who could have done anything with a team that loses their biggest hitter (Sexson), has a terrible closer (Mantei, Valverde, etc.), and has no depth because of the trade to get Sexson. Like they say, you can't fire the players.

Answer my prayer and let the next MGR fired be A Howe

Postby SonsofSlam04 » Fri Jul 02, 2004 4:47 pm

With Brenly out there, I would love for the NY Mets to do something right for a change and get rid of the underachieving A Howe and hire Brenly... A Howe has no fire in him whatsoever. He was practically gift wrapped and hand carried to the Mets by the A's... that should have been the red flag signaling them to avoid him.

Fire Howe to hire Brenly? 8-o

Don't get me wrong I think the Mets can do better than Howe but Brenly is not the answer IMHO. :-D

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
