Late Nomar info

Postby thehat » Fri Jul 02, 2004 4:55 am

Got this via e-mail from a very solid source. Same guy who told me Schilling was a done deal before it got done. He says Nomar will be traded before the team gets back to Boston Tuesday, and there's a very good chance it will go down Friday.

The three way with Toronto/Dodgers is still possible, but the favorite is a deal with the Cubs for Clement/Mitre.

NL and AL only leaguers take note. This is a pretty significant fantasy trade (either one)!

Now let's see if it happens.

That be sweet if the Cubs got Nomar. Boston would make out nice too with Clement.

not too hard to believe after watching nomar sit on the bench and pout while the rest of the team was into the game, standing up against the rail and cheering.

thanks for passing on the info, would be very interesting

I heard this on 670 The Score in Chicago. Im not sure about it. Nomars stats away from Fenway aren't nearly as good as the ones he had at Fenway. I think the Cubs would not do this trade unless they know for sure that they will have Kerry Wood back. I think he would be very happy to get away from Fenway, but I am not sure we need another power hitter. Hes a definite upgrade over Gonzalez, Ordonez or Martinez at SS however.

I believe if you're the Cubs you have to do this deal or something close to it. I don't believe you are going to be able to sign Clement and the Cardinals look to be close to locking up Renteria so Nomar is the only real "difference making" SS out there.

I would hate to lose Clement and Mitre has potential (but then again Juan Cruz did also).

there is a discussion about this in another forum... check it out.

From the sounds of it (and especially after looking at the Cubs main site) it looks like it is not going to happen

unless Hendry has something up his sleeve, it looks like the Cubs are going to be quiet mid-season (here's hoping I am wrong, of course!!)

I don't know what to say about this trade...I really like Clement but I would think we would need another bat, wouldn't we? Our pitching is pretty damn good already but you take a bat like Nomars (when hes hitting) and it really hurts the line-up...jeeze this is just weird. I thought I would grow old and watch Nomar retire with the Sox...things change way to fast. :-/

The Cubs laughed off a rumor that they might send Matt Clement to Boston for Nomar Garciaparra.
Peter Gammons, among others, reported the rumor on Baseball Tonight. The Cubs would rather go after bullpen help, though, and are one of many teams looking at Ugueth Urbina, so LaTroy Hawkins owners should be aware. Jul. 2 - 8:32 am et
